MY GIRL SCENE CRITIQUE

The movie my girl which was first released in 1991, starring Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin, starts in a small town, in a funeral home. Vada, Anna Chlumsky, is the daughter of a funeral director and they live in the funeral home. Vada and a boy names Thomas J. are best friends. Previously in the movie, Thomas J. gave Vada a ring and she lost it. Thomas J. wants to go into the woods and find it to bring it back to Vada. However, there is a bees nest near it and unfortunately, Thomas is highly allergic to bees. In the scene, the bees start attacking little Thomas and he sadly dies in the woods trying to find the ring. Vada is crushed by the news where his funeral is held at their funeral house and it is very difficult for her to cope with.

The scene begins with Thomas walking through the woods and there is a loud sound of his footsteps walking and birds in the background. This establishes the setting in the woods where Thomas is searching for the ring to the audience. The music starts as a light tone as he starts digging through the leaves to find the ring. The shifting through the leaves sound is loud while Thomas is going through them. We are panned down to the ground where there is the nest, he then kicks the nest, which foreshadows for what is to come next, evoking fear. The clips jump cut to Thomas and the nest over and over. Sound effects were a big part in this scene. The bees start slowly flying out of the nest and we can hear the buzzing. At this point, the music in the background starts becoming heavier and concerning to go along with what is to come.

At this point, the bees have basically surrounded Thomas and he notices. He is swarmed by the bees and is yelling for help. The sounds effect of the buzzing is much louder than before and continues to grow to show how many bees there are near Thomas. The shots that were taken in this scene tend to be closer shots, usually just getting Thomas from the chest up. I think that this was done purposefully to keep the audience focused on the problem of the scene, so we are not distracted by the scenery around it.

The most important shot of the scene would be of his glasses in slow motion falling to the ground to show the panic and seriousness of the situation that Thomas is in. That is the last part of the scene that they leave the viewer before it changes.

My Girl is one of my favorite movies and I do recommend this to anyone who has not seen it. There was nothing super cinematic about this scene, mostly just focusing on cuts and sound effect, but gives so much fear to the audience with simple tricks that they used.
