For this movie assignment, I was a newer movie, and it was Lala Land. I had never seen this movie before, I have just heard music in the past! This movie is a love story of where the main character Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) meet and fall in love. Sebastian is a piano player and Mia runs into him while at a party and throughout the movie and you see their relationship as it extends. Throughout the movie, Sebastian ends up joining a band and the relationship they once had has changed tremendously.

A big part of the movie is the actual music itself. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Mia and Sebastian are walking from the party in the dark and he starts singing to her. I like this scene because it starts with them walking up a dark road with street lights. The street lights give enough light to make it look like it is really nighttime and it makes the whole lighting of the scene almost blue/purple. Also, in the scene, Mia is wearing a yellow dress, which was definitely done on purpose to make her pop in the frame of the darker shot which looks really good. This scene is also steady cammed of them. They are walking to the camera. They are using some pan shots of them walking from left to right to match the direction they are walking in. In the background, they have put mountains and a purple yellow sunset to draw attention to the time, and overall it makes the lighting cool. This scene is one where they sing and dance, and I like how the camera in a way mimics their dance moves, it keeps you interested in the scene.

Another very cinematic scene from this movie is the ending scene. In the ending scene, there are many shifts of lighting styles. There are parts where Sebastian is playing the piano and there are blue lights highlighting him. There is also warmer lighting done with Mia standing in the restaurant/bar. And lastly, there is a trumpet player where it is completely dark except a light directly on his head and trumpet making like a silhouette. I like the way these scenes are lit, it makes it more dramatic. I also like how they put in the trumpet player that was playing the whole time, it gives a good extra thing to keep you interested.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and music in it! I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to watch a fun musical. I thought the storyline really kept my attention. Usually, I do not like musicals, but this one really was good.
